The West Wing is a totally private section of The 26 room Captain Morse House, one of Edgartown's premier vacation rental homes.

Renting a Wing of the House

The Captain Morse House is a large vacation rental. We have the unique ability to rent out the home as wings. The Wings are 100% private and would probably best be described as two townhouses. There is no shared any interior spaces; each Wing has it's own kitchen, entrance, and rooms. Each wing accommodates 8 to 12 people in 6 bedrooms. You also have the option to add or subtract sleeping arrangements on the 3rd floor. See below for more information.

West Wing Rental (The property you are currently viewing)

Accommodations: 9 rooms, 6 bedrooms plus a sleeping loft, sleeping up to 12, 4 bathrooms.

The 1st-floor consists of a large open plan living room, and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private bar. Off of the living room, there is a Queen bedroom with an en-suite bath.
At the top of the 2nd-floor staircase, there is a loft with a bunk bed and a twin bed for 3 people plus a shared bath. Through the hall, there is a large king bedroom with an en-suite bath. A single bedroom lies just off of the bunk loft 
The 3rd-floor has three bedrooms and a bathroom; One double/full bedroom, and two single/twin bedrooms.

Please note that the stairs in this 1840's house are steep and not to code. People with mobility issues should sleep on the 1st floor.

East Wing Rental (If you want this you will need to exit this property and search for it)

Accommodations: 10 rooms, 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps up to 12.

The East Wing 1st Floor of the house s the more formal of the two. To the East is a large front living room with private access to two large front porches facing North Water Street with water views of Edgartown Harbor. There is an en-suite bedroom with a pull out couch and "air-dream" mattress. The large dining room can seat 12 and there is a large gourmet kitchen with top of the line appliances.
The 2nd floor features a king bedroom that can be made en-suite, two Queen Bedrooms, a large double twin bedroom, and two baths.
The 3rd floor includes a small sitting area and a large front bedroom with a Queen bed and two twins. 
Please note that the stairs in this 1840's house are steep and not to code. People with mobility issues should sleep on the 1st floor.

Adding Accommodations to Wing Rentals

Either Wing can add accommodations for an additional 4 people and exclusive use of the 3rd floor by increasing the people staying at the house from 12 to a maximum of 16. This gives your guests private access to the entire 3rd floor. If the East Wing guest selects 16 then the West Wings maximum would be 8. If the West Wing guest selects 16 then the East Wings maximum would be 8
The standard rates are designed for 8 people. Additional people up to 12 are $50/day/person. The standard cost for the exclusive use of the 3rd floor is $1,400 a week. 

Shared Amenities

Both the East and West Wings are totally private inside. Outside you share the large backyard and patio. There are two large exterior 8 person teak tables each with a large market umbrella. There is also a shared large BBQ. On the lawn are 5 chaise lounges. On the side of the property is a driveway with off-street parking for three to four cars but we limit this to one car for each wing. The tool shed has bikes and there is a toy box with beach chairs and umbrellas.

We have developed a system to allow for a guest to have a patio party during one evening of their stay. Please see the EVENTS section below. 

We have a 12 passenger Ford Transit van available as a separate rental. Please ask or visit it on Turo

General Information

This large and historic home is framed by 10 Doric columns faces Edgartown harbor. The large yard and garden offer a private oasis from the bustle of a Vineyard summer. The yard is graced by three towering and magnificent Linden trees.

Outside on the North Water Street side of the house, there are two spacious porches with views of Edgartown Harbor. Edgartown’s North Wharf lies below the house at the end of Morse Street. It is a great place to go and enjoy the busy waterfront or perhaps some fishing. We have a modest driveway that can hold 4 cars and you have the right to park one in the driveway.The driveway is narrow and shared with the guests in the other Wing. The driveway leads to the backyard. Our backyard is one of the most spacious and safe in town and features a bricked patio with seating for 20 with a very nice barbecue. The tool shed holds complimentary bicycles. Complimentary beach chairs and lawn games are provided.

As you might be able to guess we specialize in large families, family reunions, weddings, anniversaries, and any event where people want to enjoy each other’s company without the distraction of others. Large groups regularly book our home for its charm, comfort, and unique character and grace. With that said our long time repeat tenants tend to be smaller families of 6 or so. They then invite friends to come and visit and use the large spaces for entertaining. In my youth, I lived in a house with my brother and parents. It seems unusual now but back then we just took it for granted and helped our father with the maintenance and lawn work.

EVENTS:

We are happy to have events but you will need to apply for written permission.

If a West Wing guest is staying for 4 nights or longer they can request to hold one private event from 5pm to 9pm on the patio. If the West Wing guest does that then they must also offer a private event on the patio to the guests in the East wing. Because the East Wing is not contiguous with the patio the East Wing guests cannot request to hold a private patio event without the West Wing either (a) already holding an event or (b) getting permission from the West Wing guests. This policy is new and is subject to change. We hope that it will work out for all involved. The maximum size of the event is 50 including any vendors.

THE SURROUNDING AREA:

The Captain Morse House is located at the corner of Morse and North Water Streets. The town of Edgartown is defined principally by its Main Street. To the south is South Water Street which winds by the giant pagoda tree and towards the road to Katama and South Beach. North Water Street runs the opposite way and the Captain Morse House is located about halfway between Main Street and the Harbor View Hotel which looks over the Edgartown Lighthouse and the entrance to the harbor.

I grew up in the home you are viewing.

I grew up on Martha's Vineyard and spent my summers there until I graduated from college. Now I come back every spring and fall to work on the properties and connect with old friends and new.

Our main rental property is the Captain Morse House (VRBO# 212151) in Edgartown. This property has been in our family since 1955 when my father purchased it. It was used exclusively by our family until 2008. It has been a successful vacation rental since then.

In 2017 we bought Indian Hill Road (VRBO# 1853268) as a flip and then promptly made a classic mistake. We over improved the property. Because of this it will be hard to sell so we have decided to rent it out. The island has a shortage of good quality rentals and we think that this will rent well.

Indian Hill Road was a brand new project for us. It is quite a home and we are proud to be able to share it with you.
We had one very successful (5 star review!) rental for the main house in 2019. The cottage we rented out for the first time long term (18 months) to a young couple. They are moving out June 1st. Those successful rentals have encouraged us to put the house on the rental market for this coming season.

Both of our properties have 5 star reviews and it is our intention to keep them at that level.

My Background:
I grew up in the Captain Morse House in Edgartown and spent my summers there until I graduated from Tufts University. I owned and ran Island Sports, the countries oldest and largest Windsurfing and Board Sports store, most of my adult life from 1974 until 2007. I have built several homes and done numerous renovations. I enjoy the challenge of creating wonderful living spaces. I am now a Realtor in Southern Florida but really spend most of my time working on these rental properties.
